Result of EWU survey on terrorism published

Family’s apathy, political incitement, and unemployment seem to be three main reasons behind terrorism. Religious ignorance as well as social media are also responsible for terrorism. One thousand current university students participated in a survey conducted by the Department of Law, East West University (EWU). Prof Dr Tureen Afroz, Chairperson, Department of Law, EWU and the Prosecutor of the International Crimes Tribunal in Bangladesh highlighted the result of the survey in a research seminar held at EWU campus Aftabnagar in the capital on Sunday.
93.6 percent of students who took part in the survey believe that the most crucial reason behind terrorism is family’s apathy. 90.4 percent believes that political incitement and 89.1 percent believes that unemployment is responsible for terrorism. Besides, 84.6 percent of students believe that religious ignorance and 81.1 percent believes that social media are the main reasons for the proliferation of terrorism.
The university students gave their opinion in the survey that appropriate education, family and social awareness, and monitoring can play an important role to prevent terrorism. Moreover, enactment and implementation of proper legislation may contribute to check terrorism.
Dr Mohammed Farashuddin, Chairperson of the Board of Trustees, EWU and former Governor of Bangladesh Bank was the chair of the program.
Iqbal Sobhan Chowdhury, Prime Minister’s Media Adviser was the Chief Guest and Md. Monirul Islam, Additional Commissioner, Chief of Counter Terrorism Unit of Dhaka Metropolitan Police was the special guest of the program.
Prof Dr MM Shahidul Hassan, Vice-Chancellor, EWU, addressed welcome remarks. Deans of all Faculties, Chairpersons, teachers, staffs, and students of different departments also participated in the program.
