Speakers at a roundtable discussion have said that India’s unilateral water withdrawal from 54 common rivers have been seriously affecting the environment, ecology and biodiversity of Bangladesh, and causing all natural disasters. A national consensus is, therefore, required to resist the water aggression, they also said.
Free Thinkers’ Forum (FTF), a pro-BNP organisation, arranged the seminar titled “Sharing of Ganges Water: How long to Wait?” at the National Press Club in the city on Friday on the occasion of 38th anniversary of historic ‘Farakka Long March Day’.
BNP standing committee member Lieutenant General (Retd) Mahbubur Rahman was the chief guest with former Vice Chancellor of Dhaka University Prof Dr Emajuddin Ahmed as president. Moderated by the FTF Chairman Jahangir Chowdhury, Barrister Haider Ali, BNP central leaders Abu Naser Mohammad Rahmatullah and Advocate Abed Raza also addressed the function, among others.
Mahbubur Rahman said, India is responsible for all the natural disasters in Bangladesh. India constructed dams and barrages in the upstream of common rivers violating the
international law. He blamed the submissive foreign policy of the present government for India’s audacity. Recalling country’s legendary leader Maulana Abdul Hamid Khan Bhashani for his historic Long March, the former army chief advised massive movement to stop Indian water aggression.
Prof Emajuddin Ahmed said that once Bangladesh had about 1500 rivers, now 200 rivers only. More rivers are going to die due to dams and barrages constructed by India.
Bangladesh National Awami Party (Bangladesh NAP) also arranged a roundtable discussion at the National Press Club with the party chairman Jebel Rahman Ghani in the chair. NAP Bhashani formed a human chain in front of the Press Club while ‘Nodi Bachao Andolan’ also formed a separate human chain on the venue.
