The Parliamentary Standing Committee on the Ministry of Science and Science and Information and Communication Technology (ICT) on Monday placed its report on the Oceanographic Research Institute Bill, 2014 in the Jatiya Sangsad.
Chairman of the committee Dr AFM Ruhal Haque placed the report.
Earlier, State Minister for Science and Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Architect Yafes Osman placed the bill in the House proposing a research institute to extract sea resources and ensure their proper usages.
According to the bill, the oceanographic research institute will be a statutory body with a Director General as its chief executive, who will also be a member-secretary of the 18-member board of directors.
Secretary of the Ministry of Science and ICT will be the chairman of the board while science and technology experts as well as representatives of the relevant ministries will be its members.
The head office of the oceanographic research institute would be established at Ramu upazila under Cox’s Bazar district with a provision for setting up its branch office at any place across the country, the bill said.
The activities of the institute include: Conducting research on physical Oceanography, Geological Oceanography, Chemical Oceanography, Biological Oceanography, Climate Change and the Ocean and other oceanography related affairs.
