MEDIA reports said Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) is taking renewed initiative to systemized city bus routes by ensuring that all buses to be plied only under a number of transport companies to end the chaos in city streets. Powerful bus owners indiscriminately operate their vehicles blocking the streets and endangering people’s life. In fact the move to rationalize city bus routes were initiated way back in 1997 under Dhaka Urban Transport Development project. But there is no visible progress so far.
The new DSCC Mayor Fazle Noor Taposh has this time taken the renewed initiative and held the 12th meeting of the city transport reorganization committee on Tuesday in which Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) mayor also joined vowing to give the highest priority to implement stalled initiative. Earlier the two former city mayors were not able to remove the bottleneck because the corruption plagued government failed to give its backing.
Tuesday’s meeting was however informed that none of the decisions taken in past meetings were implemented while more decisions were violated which had called for suspension of issuance of new route permits and such other prohibitive steps. The two mayors have however said this time they must succeed or they would suggest the government to abandon the scheme, which will not be a good decision either.
The government has no extra money. We also do not like free use of government money. The money that the city corporations collect from our people must first be utilised honestly.
