The ‘Amar Ekushey’ and the International Mother Language Day was observed in different districts on Friday with paying rich tributes to the martyrs of the historic Language Movement of 1952. Various political parties, socio-cultural, volunteer organisations and educational institutions observed the Day with various programmes. Our correspondents and agencies report:
Barisal Correspondent reports: Ekushey February, and the International Mother Language Day was observed with due respect in Barisal on Friday.
Thousands of barefooted people including law makers, BCC Mayor, leaders of socio-political organistions, high officials of the divisional, district, police administration, Barisal Reporters Unity, leaders and representatives of more than 350 socio-cultural-political-educational -religious, government and non government, voluntary organisations wearing black badges paid tribute to the martyrs of the language movement of 1952 by placing floral wreath at the altar of the Central Shaheed Minar of the city from Friday early hours to noon.
Black and half mast national flags were hoisted on every house-top.
Discussion meetings, cultural functions, painting, hand writing competitions, were held by different organizations including district and divisional administration, Karak, Charukala, Shishu Academy throughout the day on this occasion.
Barisal Reporters Unity organized a two-day long exhibition of photos, documents on history and development of Bangla language, movement for state language, at Central Shaheed Minar of the city inaugurated by Yusuf Hossain Kalu, language movement veteran of Barisal on Thursday afternoon.
On this occasion four-day long programs of discussion meetings, recitations, cultural functions, dramas were held at Barisal Central Shaheed Minar, organized by Barisal Sangskritik Sangothan Samonnya Parishad, an alliance of 26 cultural organizations of the city, and hundreds of spectators enjoyed the programs from every afternoon to late night.
Blood donation camp of district administration in colloaboration with Rahat-Anowar Hospital held at Barishal Circuit House on Friday.
Charukala Barishal operated drives of drawing Alpana and Paintings on language movement surrounding the wall and roads of Central Shaheed Minar.
Special prayers were held at different religious prayer places and organizations for the blessings of the departed souls of the martyrs of the language movement and liberation war and welfare of the country and nation.
Khulna (South) Correspondent reports: Amar Ekushey and the International Mother Language Day was observed on Friday with due respect and festivity in Khulna city and at nine upazia areas of the district.
Marking the day, Different government, semi-government, autonomous bodies, socio-cultural organisations, Political parties and educational institutions arranged several programs. The district and upazila administrations of Khulna and other organizations arranged elaborate programs with a view to observe the day.
Earlier the programmes were finalised at a preparatory meeting recently which was held at the Deputy Commissioner’s office while Deputy Commissioner (DC) Mohammad Helal Hossain chaired the meeting.
In Khulna city, the programme began at one minute past after midnight on February 21, 2020 where the State Minister of Labor and Employment Begum Monnujan Sufian placed floral wreaths at the Central Shaheed Minar in City’s Shaheed Hadis Park.
Later, Mayor of Khulna City Corporation (KCC) Talukder Abdul Khaleque, Muktijoddha Sangsad, Divisional Commissioner Dr Anwar Uddin Howlader, Khulna Metropolitan Police Commissioner (KMP) Khandoker Lutful Kabir, Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Khulna Range Dr Khondokar Mohid Uddin placed wreaths from their respective offices.
Deputy Commissioner (DC) Mohammad Helal Hossain along with officials of the district and upazila administrations will also place floral wreaths there to be followed by the other government and non-government departments and organizations.
Bangladesh Awami League (AL) and its front organisations and other political parties, social, cultural and professional organizations and common people also placed wreaths.
Khulna University of Engineering and Technology (KUET), Khulna University (KU), Khulna City Corporation (KCC), Khulna Press Club, Khulna Union of Journalists (KUJ) also placed wreaths at the Shaheed Minar.
The other programmes included hoisting of national flag at half-mast atop all buildings, educational institutions, probhat ferries (morning processions), decoration of the streets with miniature national and colorful flags inscribed with Bengali alphabets.
Besides, competitions for the children on drawing, essay writing, rendering patriotic songs, and recitation of poems and sports competitions for the students were also arranged along with screening of documentary films.
Sylhet Bureau says: On the occasion of Amar Ekushey and International Mother Language Day as well as the 68th anniversary of the historic Language Movement, Language martyrs were remembered with humble respect in Sylhet on Friday . Thousands of people from all walks of life including local politicians and dignitaries have paid floral homage to the language heroes attending at the Central Saheed Minar in the city.
Sylhet Central Shaheed Minar was the barefooted destination of the people from various parts of the city with flowers of gratitude to pay homage to the Shaheed Minar altar.
Earlier on the first hour of the Ekushey, the floral offering began at 12:01 am. The formality began with the floral offering of the freedom fighters; later, Sylhet City Corporation Mayor Ariful Haque Chowdhury paid tribute first in the new order. Then, the divisional commissioner, DIG Sylhet Range, DC, SP, district and metropolitan Awami League and then various political and social organizations paid tribute according to the protocol.
As part of the day’s program, the Ekushey ‘probhat ferries’ was organised in the initiatives of Sylhet district and metropolitan Awami League.
Staff Reporter, Kishoreganj reports: Kishoreganj District Administration, District Police, RAB- 14, Kishoreganj Jail, Islamic Foundation, Kishoerganj Press Club, political parties including ruling Awami League, BNP, Jasod, Ganatantree Party, NAP and socio-cultural and voluntary organisations and educational institutions observed the International Mother Language Day with a renewed pledge for building a happy prosperous and non-communul Bangladesh free from militancy and terrorism on Friday . National Flag was hoisted at half-mast a top all government buildings, private buildings and educational institutions, cultural organisations ‘probhat ferries’ were brought out in the town that ended at the Shaheed Minar.
Kishoreganj District Administration organiseda nine days begins Book Fair- 2020 at Biam Labratories School play ground. Rejwan Ahammed Toufique MP attented as chief guest while Deputy Commissioner Md. Sarowar Morshed Chowdhury presided over the Book Fair function on Friday. At least 100 book stalls were set-up in the fair.

Gouripur( Mymensingh) says: Amar Ekushey, the Language Martyrs’ Day and the International Mother Language Day was observed in Gouripur upazila of Mymensingh district in a befitting manner, paying rich tributes to the language martyrs on Friday .  
People from all walks of life placed floral wreaths at the Central Shaheed Minar of Shahid Harun Park in the middle town and elsewhere in the upazila, recalling the supreme sacrifice made by the language heroes, who laid down their lives for the mother tongue ‘Bangla’.
 The beginning of Amar Ekushey, the Language Martyrs’ Day started at zero hours of midnight, Md Moffazal Hossain Khan, Upazila Chairman, Sejuti Dhar, UNO of Gouripur upazila, Mayor Syed Rafiqul Islam and other officials of the upazila administration and the police department, members of Gouripur Press Cub, Gouripur Sangbadik Oikya Forum and Gouripur Reporters Club, local political leaders, freedom fighters and students of different educational institutions placed floral wreaths at the Central Shaheed Minar of the upazila town. Soon the Central Shaheed Minar was bedecked with flowers and wreaths. Volunteers and councilors of Gouripur Pourashava spent a hard night tackling the streams of people who lined up in a long queue for their turn to place wreaths at the Minar. In the morning, different organizations and institutes, including Gouripur Pilot Girls High School, Nurul Amin Khan High School ,Gouripur R.K. Govt High School, Agradut High School, Gouripur Govt College, Gouripur Women College, Gouripur Govt Technical School and College .-singing in chorus the song of Amar Ekushey and carrying banners and placards, to pay homage to the language martyrs which paraded through the main roads of the town and joined to the Central Shaheed Minar and also their respective Shaheed Minars
 Besides, different political parties, socio-cultural and professional bodies as well as institutions observed Amar Ekushey and the International Mother Language Day with elaborate programmes throughout the day. They wore black badges, hoisted black flags, kept the national and organisational flags at half-mast, brought out processions, placed wreaths at the Central Shaheed Minar, held discussion meetings, poetry recitation sessions, cultural programmes, street drama, painting competitions, an essay writing competition and photographic exhibitions.
BSS from Gaibandha reports : The ‘Shaheed Dibash and the International Mother Language Day was observed in the district on Friday paying rich tributes to the Language Movement martyrs with a fresh call for ensuring use of Bengali language at all levels.
The daylong observance began at one minute past midnight through placing wreaths by whip of Bangladesh Jatiya Sangshad and local lawmaker Mahbub Ara Begum Gini at Central Shaheed Minar of Gaibandha Poura Park of the town. Deputy Commissioner (DC) Abdul Matin and police superintendent Muhammad Towhidul Islam accompanied her during the period.
Then, district administration, district police, Bangladesh Awami League,
Zila Muktijoddha Sangshad, political parties, socio-cultural and professional organisations, private bodies and institutions placed floral wreaths at the Shaheed Minar. In the morning, thousands of people of all ages in bare feet and wearing back badges took part in ‘probhat ferries’ singing song ‘Amar Bhayer Rakte Rangano Ekushey February- Ami Ki Bhulite Pari-‘to the Central Shaheed Minar and placed wreaths there. The programmes also included hoisting of the national flag at half-mast atop all government and private buildings and educational institutions, arranging four-day long book fair at Gaibandha Poura Park, art, essay writing, hand writing and patriotic songs competitions with screening of documentary films on the language movement.
Special prayers were also offered at the mosques and temples, churches, and other places of religious worships at convenient times.
In the evening, a discussion meeting was also held at the Shaheed Minar of the town highlighting the significance of the day.
Mahabub Ara Begum Gini addressed the function as the chief guest and police Superintendent of the district, general secretary of Bangladesh Awami League Abu Bakar Siddique and mayor of Gaibandha Municipality Advocate Shah Masud Zahangir Kabir Milon were present as special guests with DC Abdul Matin in the chair.
The programme was followed by a cultural function where the artists of Zila Shilpakala Academy rendered songs and cultural personalities of the town recited poems marking the day. After the function, prizes were distributed to the winners.
A large number of people from all walks of life participated in the programmes spontaneously.
BSS from Rangpur says: The ‘Shaheed Dibash and the International Mother Language Day-2020’ was observed paying rich tributes to the Language Movement martyrs in the city and the district as elsewhere in the country on Friday.
Thousands of people of all ages participated in the daylong programmes since midnight for observing the day with a fresh pledge to ensure use of Bengali at all levels.
Under management of Rangpur City Corporation and the district administration, the observance began at one minute past after midnight with placing wreaths at the Central Shaheed Minar in the city amid tight security measures.

Local leaders of Bangladesh Muktijoddha Sangshad, AL and its associate bodies, BNP, Jatiya Party, JaSoD, CPB, BSD, Workers’ Party, Ganatantry Party and other political parties, heads of different government departments and non-government organizations, educational institutions, NGOs and professional organisations and common people also placed wreaths there to pay homage to the Language Movement martyrs.
Earlier in the morning, hundreds of people in bare feet and wearing black badges took part in ‘probhat ferries’ singing song ‘Amar Bhayer Rakte Rangano Ekushey February– Ami Ki Bhulite Pari–‘ to the Central Shaheed Minar before placing wreaths there.
The divisional, district and police administrations, socio-cultural and professional organisations, political parties, private bodies and institutions chalked out programmes to observe the day.
The programmes included hoisting of the national flag at half-mast at district AL office and atop government and private buildings and educational institutions, decoration of the city streets with miniature national and coloured-flags inscribed with Bengali alphabets.
The language movement veterans were accorded receptions and special prayers offered at mosques, temples, churches, pagodas and other places of religious worship.
A poem festival on the language movement, War of Liberation and Bangabandhu, screening of documentary films, competitions for children on drawing, essay writing, handwriting and patriotic songs and sports for underprivileged children were arranged.
Besides, discussions and cultural functions were organised and the local daily, weekly, fortnightly, monthly, online and others newspapers published special issues and Rangpur Betar Kendra aired special programmes narrating significance of the day.
Begum Rokeya University, Rangpur Medical College, Carmichael College, Rangpur Government College and other educational institutions also observed the day through daylong programmes.

Various political parties, socio-cultural and volunteer organizations and educational institutions observed the day with a renewed pledge for building a happy, prosperous and non-communal Bangladesh.
Since early morning, thousands of people were seen on barefooted with bunches of flowers progressing towards the nearby Shaheed Minars especially those at Rajshahi College and Bhuban Mohan Park to pay their deep respect to the languages movement heroes with singing “Amar Bhaiyer Rakte Rangano Ekushey February, Ami ki Bhulite Pari”.
Rajshahi City Corporation (RCC) and the district and police administration also observed the day with elaborate programmes.
The programmes included placing of wreaths at the Shaheed Minar, hoisting of national flags at half-mast in all public and private buildings and mourning procession, discussion and cultural functions.
City Mayor AHM Khairuzzaman Liton accompanied by Commissioner of Rajshahi Metropolitan Police Humayun Kabir placed wreaths at the altar of Rajshahi College Shaheed Minar at zero hours.
Divisional Commissioner Humayun Kabir Khandaker, Deputy Commissioner Hamidul Haque and divisional and district level administrative officials placed wreaths at Court Shaheed Minar while Deputy Inspector General of Police in Rajshahi Range Hafiz Akhter, Superintendent of Police Muhammad Shahidullah and other senior police officers placed wreaths at Police Line Shaheed Minar.
The day’s programmes also include Quran Khwani and discussion at the Imam Training Academy, art competition at Shishu Academy and Shilpakala Academy, serving improved diets to the inmates of hospitals, jails, safe homes and baby homes and screening of documentary films on the Language Movement.
Meanwhile, Rajshahi University (RU), Rajshahi University of Engineering and Technology (RUET), Rajshahi Medical University, Rajshahi Medical College (RMC) and other educational institutions chalked out elaborate programmes marking the day.
