Kamruzzaman Bablu :
Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) has issued deadline to the mobile operators to remove their illegal optical fibre by June, 2017 and to enroll their network data of under-construction Web-based interactive Geographical Information System (GIS) map.
“Mobile operators set up their own fibre optic networks in absence of GIS. As a result it stood as barrier to the government’s move to ensure internet for all by the year 2021,” said Dr Shahjahan Mahmood, BTRC Chairman to The New Nation recently. In view of this, the government has taken the above decision, he added.
On condition of anonymity, another official of BTRC said, the government has so far constructed GIS map in 464 upazilas out of 510 across the country. It means 55,000 square kilometres have come under the GIS map so far to find out country’s actual position on installation of optical fibre link, he said.
BTRC has already asked the mobile operators to provide their legal data on installation of optic fibre by June 2017. Otherwise the BTRC would
consider additional network link as illegal,” he said.
About the Citycell issue, the BTRC Chairman said, “We have set a deadline on August 16, 2016 requesting the subscribers to choose another operator.”
The Citycell has 1.7 lakh subscribers only after biometric registration, he said. “Two days ago, Citycell representatives met me and informed about their new business prospect and I have conveyed it to the government,” he said.
Responding to another quarry, the regulatory body Chief said Internet users in Dhaka city might face more telecommunication midnight and holiday blackouts as telecom regulatory authorities are going for more blackout exercises in some particular areas of the capital.
