Govt to import another 50,000 tonnes of rice

The government will buy another 50,000 tonnes of rice from India.
The decision came from a meeting of the cabinet committee on government purchase on Wednesday headed by Finance Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal.
The rice will be purchased at a rate of $430.33 a tonne, Sahida Akter, additional secretary of the cabinet division, said at a virtual briefing after the meeting. India’s PK Agri Link Private Ltd will supply the rice.
The cabinet committee also gave go-ahead to the purchase of 33.6 lakh MMBTU liquefied natural gas from US company Excelerate Energy LP. Each unit will cost $6.53.
Along with this two, the committee approved six proposals involving over Tk 1,493 crore.
Of it, the government will provide nearly Tk 959 crore while the rest Tk 534 crore will come from loans extended by the Asian Development Bank, the Agence Française de Développement (AFD) and the European Investment Bank.
