Dhaka South City Corporation Mayor Sayeed Khokon on Saturday said that no inflammable chemical would be allowed to store in old Dhaka any more.
He reiterated his decision and warned that the warehouse owners would face stern legal action for storing of any inflammable chemical in Old Dhaka from now.
He said it to the journalists while visiting Chawkbazar Churihatta in the capital where an inferno spread out on Wednesday night and claimed at least 67 lives.
The mayor said also that the DSCC had started relocation of chemical warehouses from old Dhaka and the work would continue in future.
DSCC mayor said quoting police that the fire originated from a blast of a private car’s gas cylinder and spread sharply due to inflammable substances in the area.
Mayor said, “Police informed that the fire sprang from a private car’s gas cylinder explosion. There were more than one cars which came in contact with the blast instantly.”
Warning the warehouse owners, the mayor also urged the local people to stay alert so that no one can store any inflammable chemical in the area.
If anyone violates the instruction, please inform the city corporation, nearby police station or Deputy Commissioners immediately, he told reporters.
The mayor gave also a hotline number 9556015 to inform the matter.
However, the DSCC authorities on Saturday started to relocate the inflammable chemicals, which ignited the fire in the area, from the basement of the Haji Wahed Mansion to another location.
Chawkbazar locals to ban gas cylinders: Meanwhile, the local people of Chawkbazar urged the mayor to stop using of all types of gas cylinders to prevent such type of inferno.
More than 100 people took to the streets around 1:15pm, and placed their demand during the DSCC mayor’s visit in the area.
