Remain alert against using students by militants as weapons: President

President Abdul Hamid on Wednesday asked the university authorities, teachers and guardians to remain alert so that the militant, fundamentalist and anti-liberation forces cannot use students to create chaos in the society.
“Unfortunately it is true that some educated youths are being used by militant, fundamentalist and anti-liberation clique who are creating a negative impression among the people about the higher education,” the President said while speaking at the 2nd convocation of City University here.
Education minister Nurul Islam Nahid, University Grants Commission (UGC) Chairman Prof Abdul Mannan, Chairman of the board of trustees of City University Makbul Hossain, City University VC NRM Borhan Uddin, among others, spoke at the convocation.
Professor Emeritus Dr AK Azad Chowdhury delivered convocation speech.
Abdul Hamid said universities are the best place for higher education and research where side by side with teaching, continued practice of knowledge, free thinking and research in various areas of education take place, and it ultimately helps expand the world of knowledge and thinking.
He hoped that the country’s universities would be able to come up with best opportunities to impart knowledge to the students.
Congratulating the new graduates, the President who is also the chancellor of all the universities, asked the graduates to work for the welfare of the people as well as the country.
“You are graduates, the higher human resources of the country and today’s convocation is giving recognition of your achievements and on the other hand, it is bestowing responsibilities on you . . .these responsibilities are towards your family, society, above all towards the country and the nation,” he added.
Referring to inextricable link between education and research, the chancellor laid emphasis on research in the universities and said new knowledge has been created through research which plays important role in fulfilling the existing demands of the society.
 He asked the universities to build collaboration with famous local and foreign universities for exchanging information, research, seminar, curricula, contemporary knowledge-science and innovations.
Abdul Hamid said the main aim of the great liberation war was to build a happy-prosperous Bangladesh. The country is progressing fast as it achieved tremendous success in education, women empowerment, sanitation, agriculture and ICT and in increasing per capita income, he added.
He said the present government has taken up plan to turn Bangladesh into a middle income country by 2021 and a developed country by 2041 and urged all irrespective of party affiliations, caste and creed to play their due role from their respective position to make this plan of the government a success.
