The government has further intensified relief activities for flood-affected people to mitigate their sufferings in seven northern districts along the Brahmaputra basin, official sources said.
Sources in the concerned district administrations said, the overall flood situation has been improving fast during the past three consecutive days in Rangpur, Nilphamari, Kurigram, Lalmonirhat, Gaibandha, Bogra and Sirajganj districts.
The relief activities have been intensified further in these districts and the government has allocated more rice and cash money through the Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief for the purpose.
Under the programme, the government has allocated 5,750 tonnes of rice, Taka 1.865 crore and huge quantity of dry foods for distribution among the flood affected people of these seven northern districts. The district administrations have allocated 4,323.77 tonnes of rice and Taka 1.391 crore till today and upazila administrations in association with local public representatives have been distributing those among the flood-and erosion-hit people.
The concerned district administrations still have reserves of 1,426.23 tonnes of rice and Taka 4.74 lakh in their hands now for distribution, if necessary any time.
According to official sources, about 4.65 lakh families have been affected by current floods in these seven districts where the flood situation has been improving during the past three consecutive days.
Sources in Rangpur district administration said the government has allocated 300 tonnes of rice and Taka 8 lakh, and of them, 76 tonnes of rice and Taka 1.22 lakh have so far been distributed among the flood-affected people under three upazilas. District Relief and Rehabilitation officer (DRRO) of Nilphamari Tazul Islam said about 12,600 people of 2,800 families have been affected by flood in 16 villages under eight unions of two upazilas in the district.
“The government has allocated 550 tonnes of rice, Taka 15 lakh and huge dry food bags each containing 5 kg rice, one kg pulse, sugar, salt and ‘chira’, one litre soybean oil, 500 gram puffed rice, one dozen candles and two dozens matches,” he said.
Of them, 360.77 tonnes of rice, Taka 12.04 lakh in cash have so far been distributed among the flood-affected people of Nilphamari where the flood situation marked huge improvement in recent days.
DRRO of Lalmonirhat AKM Idris Ali said the government has allocated 800 tonnes of rice, Taka 26.50 lakh and huge dry foods for distribution among the flood affected people in the district.
“We have already distributed 696 tonnes of rice, Taka 26.45 lakh and the dry foods among the flood-hit families in the district,” Ali said.
Kurigram DRRO Abdul Mottalib said some 1.350 lakh families have been affected by flood in many villages under all nine upazilas in the district and the situation has been improving continuously during the past few days.
“The government has allocated 1,375 tonnes of rice, Taka 43 lakh and dry foods and we have so far allocated 1,275 tonnes of rice, Taka 38 lakh and the dry foods for distribution among the affected people in the district,” he said.
Gaibandha DRRO Habibur Rahman said some 1.45 lakh families have been affected by flood under four upazilas in the district where the overall flood situation has been improving fast.
“The government has allocated 1,050 tonnes of rice, Taka 41 lakh, dry foods and the administration distributed 960 tonnes rice, Taka 40 lakh, 1,000 bags of dry foods and more dry foods purchased at Taka 5 lakh among flood-hit people,” he added.
DRRO of Bogra Shaharul Islam Md Abu Hena said the government has allocated 400 tonnes of rice, Taka 14 lakh and huge dry foods for distribution among the flood affected people in the district.
“We have already distributed 295 tonnes of rice, Taka 4.50 lakh and huge dry foods among the flood-hit families of different village sunder three flood-affected upazilas in the district,” he said.
Sirajganj DRRO Md Waliuddin today told BSS that 1.27 lakh families have been affected by flood in many villages under four upazilas in the district and the situation has been improving in recent days.
“The government has allocated 800 tonnes of rice, Taka 39 lakh and huge dry foods and the district administration has so far allocated 661 tonnes of rice, Taka 16.80 lakh and dry foods for distribution among the affected people in Sirajganj,” he added.
