Our major problem is that the government machinery is not in a properly functioning mould. This is the common complaint that though the time is extremely difficult for the people the government officials are not available on their side to visit places to ensure that safety measures are duly observed both the buyer and shop owners.
The government officials have forgotten that serving people is their obligation. So the act of governance itself is a problem due to the state of inactivity present among government officials. At the same time it is also true that the government has not considered proper safety measures for the officials who have to take risks for doing what needs to be done.
The shop owners have to know how to follow the guidelines. The shoppers should also be made aware on how to do shopping considering the safety of others. What is true about the virus is it is so dangerous that it can be transmitted from items touched by the shoppers but not bought.
Reopening of shops for Eid purchases of clothes and items like them is proving difficult for the process of choosing items to be purchased involves touching or trying items by many different buyers.
Eid is an important religious event but the people must be made aware how risky the virus is for us to remain unaffected and alive. The guide lines are prepared by The World Health Organisation but their implementation for the safety of the people lies with the government. Blaming our simple people does not show the government’s awareness of it’s responsibility.
It is the duty of the government to learn how to implement them keeping in view the situation in our country.
The government has find ways how to make thing work. We have to think of ways of invigorating the lives of our people and our economy.
The government forgets that the responsibility lies with the government to make people aware of the dangers from the pandemic and ensure implementation of the guidelines coming from The World Health Organisation.
The relaxation of lockdown is a serious consideration the world over. Such a relaxation is essential for the country’s economy and the people’s activities to get used to the new normality of life. But everything depends upon the success of the government in taking the necessary steps for containing spread of the killer virus.
There could be a massive surge of affected persons after the reopening of shops and business if they fail to follow the guidelines.
The government has offered over Tk 1.0 trillion stimulus package to business and industry. There is doubt whether this amount of money will be properly used. Whether this amount will be available is also a question which is being asked.
We do not see much help is coming from the government for the unemployed starving workers.
So the government has to know how heavy is its responsibility and how important it is for the government do be active and honest in fulfilling the obligations at a time of national emergency. Many find the government to not be up to the task. It is widely feared that thousands of people will die of the pandemic. There will the crisis of lakhs of people going hungry.
We urge the government to change its past ways and serve the people with utmost importance.
