A longer lasting steady in water-transport movement has made a new threat for the regional trade and business in Sunamganj due to the navigational crisis of Patlai river path at Tahirpur upazila. About 50 thousand workers are directly involved with the river. Hundreds of sand loaded steel body water way carriers have been stranded on for not digging down the river. As a result, it takes more than 15 to 20 days for the 30-minute walking distance. At this point, some local unions have been extorting at various points. Traders are facing loss in this.
It is known that there is no direct road link between Tahirpur or internal district and upazila for transporting goods. In the monsoon and in late autumn, the waterways is only means for communication. Every year, billions of cubic feet of coal, limestone, sand and gravel stones are purchased from the three tariff stations at upazilas Borachhara, Bagley, Charagaon, bordering area and merchants across the country including Bhairab, Bajitpur, Kishoreganj, Ashuganj, Fatula are gathered there.
Besides, transport of various goods by boat to the southwest region of the country, including Dharmapasha, Jamalganj, Viswambhapur, Madanagar, and Kamlakanda, Mahonganj, Kishoreganj and Bhairab, are made on water way.
However, due to the navigability crisis of the rivers, the business has declined since October. It is endangering the livelihood of the people stuck on the river. Shipping workers from different districts of the country are living day by day in the Patlai river.
Navy workers Sajid Mia, Rafiq Uddin and many others said that due to the loss of navigability of the Patlai river, a naval congestion has been created from Patabuka to Kanamia Bil.
They also said that while the police patrols in the river, the naval workers are good at the temp. However, when the police leave, they have to spend days in extreme panic.
Many people including Sunamganj limestone and coal trader Rafiq Uddin said that it takes 15 to 20 days to reach a walking distance of 30 minutes due to navigability crisis. The goods cannot be delivered to buyers in time. In this situation our business is being damaged.
Tahirpur Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mohammad Atikur Rahman said the boat-jutting was created due to the water shortage due to the loss of newness of the Patlai river. There is an all-time police patrol for the safety of the seafarers.
Chairman of Tahirpur Upazila Parishad, Karuna Sindhu Chowdhury Babul, said that every year the boat owners, workers and businessmen are facing severe damage due to the navigation crisis. We will take necessary steps to get rid of it. I will speak to the officials soon, he added.
