Reform of tobacco control act suggested

Speakers at a view exchange meeting said that although significant progress has been made in tobacco controling in Bangladesh, in some cases progress has not been as expected.
Bangladesh has not yet achieved the standard smoke-free environment and banning the advertisements of tobacco products, according to the World Health Organization’s Report.
They suggested for bringing an amendment to the tobacco controlling law to achieve these goals.
The view exchange meeting was held at the health sector office of Dhaka Ahsania Mission in the capital city on Thursday under the banner of “Role of media in building a tobacco free Bangladesh 2040”.
Md Mokhlesur Rahman, Assistant Director of the Health Sector, Dhaka Ahsania Mission, and also Project Coordinator of Tobacco Control Project, presided over the meeting.
Abdus Salam Miah, Grants Manager of Campaign for Tobacco Free Kids Bangladesh, Ruhul Amin Rushd, Senior News Editor of Bangla Vision TV channel, among others, were present on the occasion.
Sharmin Rahman, Senior Program Officer of health sector of Dhaka Ahsania Mission gave a presentation on the existing tobacco control act in Bangladesh.
In her presentation she said, the existing law does not prohibit smoking in public transport and restaurants in certain cases.
It does not prohibit the display of tobacco products in sales outlets, the sale of single sticks or retail sticks of cigarettes, the sale of emerging tobacco products such as e-cigarettes, she added in her presentation.
