SB officer murder: Recording of depositions adjourned

A Dhaka court on Thursday adjourned recording the depositions of the witnesses in the case filed for killing Special Branch’s Police Officer Mahfuzur Rahman and his wife Swapna Rahman last year, as none turned up to testify.
In the circumstances, the prosecution sought time while Judge ABM Sajedur Rahman of the Speedy Trial Tribunal-3 of Dhaka granted the time petition and fixed December 10 as the next date of the case.
On August 16 last year, police recovered the
decomposed bodies of the couple from their Chamelibagh residence in the city.
Later, their only daughter Oishee Rahman surrendered to the police confessing her involvement in the killing. Police also arrested her two friends Asaduzzaman Rony and Mizanur Rahman Jony, domestic help of the house Khadiza Akhter Sumi in the case. On August 24, Oishee gave confessional statement to a court admitting her involvement in the killing of her parents.
Mahfuzur Rahman’s brother Mohammad Mashiur Rahman Rubel filed the case with Paltan Police Station on August 17 of the year. Abul Khayer, Inspector of Detective Branch of Police, submitted the charge sheet of the case against the accused on
 March 9 this year. On May 6, the Judge of Dhaka’s Metropolitan Sessions Judge’s Court framed charges against the accused and began trial on June 5 with recording the depositions of the witnesses.
Meanwhile, a juvenile court on May 20 indicted Sumi in the case as she was under 16 when the incident occurred.
On October 21 this year, the Home Ministry issued a gazette notification to transfer the case to the speedy trial tribunal. Later, the Judge of Metropolitan Sessions Judge’s Court transferred the case to this tribunal on November 12.
Of the 57 witnesses of the case, the previous court had recorded the depositions of 19 witnesses before the case was shifted to the present tribunal. They may be recalled to testify again in the case, said defense counsel Mahbub Hasan Roni.
