Prof ABM Mosharraf Husain, Bagerhat :
The arrival of ships at Mongla Sea Port in the last month surpassed its all the previous records of 69 years.
As many as one hundred (100) foreign ships carrying goods arrived at the port in the month of February, 2019. This record was set twice in the current financial year (2018-2019). All the past record of arrival of foreign ships at the port was broken for the first time in the month of last November when some 91 foreign ships arrived at the Port. At that time goods like cement, clinkers, fertilizers, machineries, cars etc. were carried by the ships.
Mongla Sea Port has been playing an important role in the country’s economic development since the calendar year of 2009 as a number appreciable steps were taken by the present party (AL) Government. It is learned from a reliable source that Mongla Port was turned into a loosing concern in the years from 2001 to 2008 owing to various man made problems. AKM Faruk Hasan, Chairman of Mongla Port Authorities told the newsmen, once (2001-2005) only 70/80 ships used arrive at the port. It may be mentioned here that only 7 ships, the lowest number of ships arrived at the port in the month of February in the fiscal year of 2007-2008. But at present on average some 70/80 or more ships are arriving at the port every month. He continued, the highest number (100) of ships arrived at the port in the month of February (2019). It is a land mark in the history of the port since its inception in the year 1950. The Chairman added, we are expecting that after the completion of the construction works of ongoing Padma Bridge, Rampal Power Plant, Khulna-Mongla Rail Line and Khan Jahan Ali Air Port the arrival of ships will be increased to a great extent. As a result, the importance and viability of the port will be enhanced to a great extent. It is learnt from a source of the port that a sum of Tk.433 crore was sanctioned in a meeting of ECNEC held on February 27 for purchasing of 75 containers, cargo handling machineries and setting up of modern channel at the river Pashur for the arrival and departure of foreign ships round the clock. It was earlier mentioned that the Government has already adopted a number of initiatives in order to enhance the capacity and viability of the port.
It is mentionable here that the port authorities earned a profit of Tk.266 crore in the fiscal year of 2016-2017 and Tk.286 crore in the fiscal year of 2017-2018 while a total of 7.5 lakh cargos were handled in the fiscal year of 2007 to 2008 and it was increased to 97 lakh tones in the fiscal year of 2017-2018.
