Sirajganj-3: AL’s 11; BNP’s 7 candidates in nomination race

The hue regarding forthcoming 11th parliamentary election has started in the constituency of Sirajganj-3 that consists of 1 municipality, 9 unions of Raiganj and 8 unions of Tarash upazila. The prospective candidates of various political parties are attending meetings, religious program and assemblies as part of the election campaign. There are twice as many voters in Raiganj than Tarash upazila.
 In forthcoming election, almost a dozen of AL and half a dozen nominees of the BNP are active in the field hoping for nomination. Apart from this Dr. Mulkit is going to claim nomination from JP that was formed by former Deputy Prime Minister Dr. M.A Motin. After the change of 90’s plot, AL and BNP have almost equal influence in this constituency. In 1991 election, AL’s Ishak Hossain and in 2001 BNP’s Abdul Manna elected as MP for electoral seat. Apart from this, Mannan Talukder won as MP in the one-sided election of 1996 and also the election of 12th January, 1996. On the other hand, AL’s Gazi Ishak Hossain was elected the first MP in 1986. In 2008 he was again elected as MP and was respectively elected as unopposed MP in 2014 from this constituency.
When Ishak died in 2016, AL’s Amzad Hossain, former chairman of Tarash upazila porishad has elected as MP in the no-contesting sub-election without opposition.In addition to the present MP, prominent business and social workers Lutfor Rahman, Jinnah ALmaji, president of Raiganj upazial AL, Shawpan Kumar, former general Secretary of upazila AL, Shakhawat Hossia, organizing secretary of the central committee of Peasant league, Advocate Imrun Hossian, son of former MP Ishak Talukder, Abul Kalam, labour affairs secretary of Raiganj upazila AL, Halim Khan, cultural secretary of upazila AL, Dr, Abdul Aziz Golam Hasan, general secretary of upazila youth league and Ahsan Habib are the AL’s candidate who are hoping for nomination.
Amjad Hossain, a colourful politician, was elected twice ass Union council chairman and Upazila chairman.He was the president and general secretary of upazila AL for 18 years.He says to The Daily New Nation regarding upcominf election,on the directives of the PM Sheikh Hasina, we are contininuing to balanced development in the area. We have done several development works including upgrading of Raiganj upazila health complex to 50 beds, establishment of fire Service, roads, bridge-culvert and so many educational intuitions. He says, if I get the nomination, the victory of AL is sure. Another AL candidate Shawpan Kumar says, if I get nomination, I will be able to make victory by defeating any BNP candidate certainly. The followers of Lutfar Rahman say, he owns a clean image. He has his acceptance among all the class-people. He cooperate the helpless in many ways. He says with optimism, If party nominates me through grassroots feedback and opinion poll, I will be easily able to will by defeating the BNP candidate.
On the other hand, Shakhawat makes regular mass communication in his locality with the hope of nomination. He says, since I have a close relation with the people, my victory is sure if I get nomination. Advocate Imrul considers himself a worthy candidate in election saying that he has huge supporters in various villages as his father was local MP of here. All the people in this constituency will be with me if I nominate and victory will be guaranteed. Abul Kalam, meanwhile, has been busy in working for picking up the election field with hope of nomination. At the end of 2005, while holding a protest against Khaleda Zia’s illegal election, he was arrested at Rasel square in Dhaka by the joint forces. He is optimistic about the victory if he gets nomination. Sarif-ul-Alam, hoping for nomination says, as I have good relation with all the people of 547 villages in this electoral area, I will won election with huge margin.
BNP’s nominees are Abudul Manna, former MP and advisor of BNP’s chairperson, Saiful Islam, village government affairs secretary of central BNP, Goalam Mostofa, senior vice president of upazila BNP, Inul Hauq, president of upazila BNP, Selim Jahangir, president of Tarash upazila BNP, Shamsul Alom, general secretary of upazila BNP, Dulal Hossian, eminent social workers and businessman.
There was extensive development work in the area while Abdul Manna was MP. At anti-government movement, he played very key role by supporting the leaders and workers. When asked about voting, he said that he made extensive development work in this area after electing MP in 1991.If the fair election is held, the general public of the area including the leaders of the all-round will elect me with huge votes.
Saiful Islam, a former founder of Chhatra Maitree of Rajshahi University, is also active in the field. Recently police arrested him on charges of sabotage. Some have described him as an outsider of this upazila. He was not seen in any active role in any movement in upazila. However, his followers refuse to accept such a criticism. As the leaders and activities of BNP-Jammat are with him, his victory is certain if he gets nomination.
Besides, Jatiya party’s (Motin Group) chairman, Dr. Mukit says, he has been serving free medical services to the poor people of this constituency for a long period of time. If he becomes MP, he will make a diabetic hospital here and his social work will be continuing like before.
