Real Madrid enjoyed a placid afternoon on Saturday when they moved back to the top of La Liga (until Sunday at least) with a comfortable 4-1 win at home to recently promoted Huesca.
Eden Hazard made his first start of the season after his long running injury problems and opened the scoring in the 40th minute with a shot from distance that surprised Huesca goalkeeper Andres Fernandez.
The goal helped to steady Real Madrid after Huesca had matched them in the opening minutes and even had a Rafa Mir goal ruled out for offside, but the newcomers to the top-flight never looked like getting back after the opening goal and even less after Karim Benzema doubled Madrid’s advantage before the break.
The French striker controlled a center from Lucas Vazquez and fired a diagonal shot past Fernandez. Vazquez produced another solid performance at right back before being replaced by Ferland Mendy at half time.
Benzema then turned provider in the 54th minute with a ball for Fede Valverde to score at the far post and put the game definitively beyond Huesca’s reach.
Real Madrid coach Zinedine Zidane made a host of changes in the 69th minute, with Toni Kroos, Rodrygo, Vinicius Jr and Isco all getting into the action and just as they were settling in David Ferreiro netted a consolation goal for the visitors.
There was still time for Benzema to nod in his second goal of the game to make it 4-1 in the 90th minute to give Madrid a much-needed boost ahead of next week’s vital Champions League clash with Inter Milan, meanwhile Huesca remain without a win from their first eight matches of the season.
