On March 2 in 1971, the then DAKSU leaders hoisted the flag of Independent Bangladesh. The hoisting of the flag on that day showed — there is no alternative to independent Bangladesh. After a long war of 9 months, an independent sovereign Bangladesh emerged in exchange of profuse blood. This flag was then considered as our national flag for 9 months of freedom struggle.
As the session of the National Assembly of Pakistan was adjourned on March 2, people of various classes and professions started gathering in the Dhaka University area against the tyranny, exploitation and oppression of the Pakistani rulers. The fearless student community and the people ignored the brutality of Pakistan and said, the Bengalis would not bow their heads. The first map of Bangladesh was hoisted by the then leader of Chhatra League ASM Abdur Rob at an assembly led by Nur-e-Alam Siddiqui, Abdul Quddus Makhan, Sirajul Alam Khan, ASM Abdur Rab and others.
The red circle in our flag symbolizes the new sun of freedom snatched away through a bloody struggle of nine months. So, our flag is our freedom.
