In urban areas, food inflation is 4.36 percent, while in rural areas it is 5.90 percent. However, non-food inflation is higher in urban areas than in rural areas. In November, non-food inflation rose to 7.99 percent in urban areas and 6.8 percent in rural areas.
According to the BBS, overall inflation in the country rose to 5.96 percent in November from 5.70 percent in the previous month. Furthermore, food inflation increased to 5.9 percent in November, up from 5.62 percent in October.
Rural people are suffering more than urban people due to rising prices of essential commodities. Prices for almost all daily commodities, beginning with rice, pulses, and flour, are higher in villages than in cities. The villagers have to spend more money on transportation, medical treatment, and furniture.

Threat of gas explosion

The incidence of gas explosions and fires is on the rise. In the last three years, there have been at least 2,152 such accidents involving gas, LPG and cylinders. Accidents are mostly caused by the excessive presence of methane gas in closed rooms. Hydrogen sulfide is often combined with methane to intensify gas explosions. The blasts caused huge casualties as well as building collapses. And in case of cylinder explosion, accidents are happening due to excess pressure, heat and holes.
There is no underground gas line during construction of any building or installation – such certificate should be taken from Titas Gas. The contractor has to work very carefully so that the gas line is not damaged during the drain repair of the city corporation. Titus needs to inspect and maintain the lines regularly to see if the gas line is leaking or damaged. If leakage is found, it should be repaired immediately. Homes, hotels, restaurants and kitchens should have adequate ventilation. In case of gas leakage, electric switches, mosquito repellent bats, mobile phones cannot be used or smoked. There is a need to ensure that the sewerage lines in Dhaka city do not mix with the gas leaks.
