Badminton in Olympics :
Winning the Men’s single title, Lee Chong Wei from Malaysia sounded a note of strong warning to the Chinese giants Lin Dan and Chen Long, who are eyeing Men’s single title in the Rio Olympic which will be held between August 4 and 19. But to me, the hot favourites will be Japan’s Kento Momota.
About the Women’s single title, I think that it will be Thailand’s three super series winner R. Intanon, Japan’s Nozomi Okuhara and India’s Saina Nehwal. The Chinese supremacy in Badminton seems to have begun to fade away. Perhaps it will be the first time that no Chinese will be in the list of the three top seeds in any Olympic Games.
They lost the Men’s World team title ‘Thomas Cup’ in 2014 to Japan and 2016 to Denmark.
Malaysia’s Lee Chong has won the Men’s single titles in the Malaysia and the Indonesia open championships, while Thailand’s Intanon captured Women’s single titles in India, Singapore and Malaysia.
Badminton was once a popular game in former East Pakistan. We saw badminton courts in every town and school during the winter season. But for want of State patronization and too much politics in school and college management committees, it is not only badminton, but almost every kind of games is fading away.
In this situation, the State intervention is needed to restore badminton’s popularity.
