The Sundarbans is more precious than electricity
With deep sadness I am wondering where have gone patriotic and valiant people like those of 1952 in the Language Movement and of 1971 in the Liberation War, who did not hesitate to lay their lives to achieve their goal.We are in dire need of people like those now when the country is crumbling down like a termite infested structure, all hopes for peace and stability are vanishing rapidly.
In our Liberation War India helped us, without their help it would have been impossible to get independence. We are grateful for it. We thought that India came forward to help a neighbour in distress, a powerful country took action out of humanity but now it seems that it is not as simple as that, India had Its own interest and design which is becoming clear day by day. It is not hesitating to take advantage in every possible way, not caring how it is affecting us.
Now Bangladesh government is going to set up a coal fired power plant, a joint venture with India, near our priceless heritage Sunderbans. It not only will destroy the worlds largest mangrove forest, it will wrought havoc all around it, the atmosphere will be polluted making people sick, they will be displaced and lose their livelihood and the pollution will increase as days go by.
Therefore, people in one voice must protest construction of the Rampal Power Plant and compel the government to abandon it. The government must not ignore people’s demand.
