Protect journalists in EgyptThe military government of Egypt arrested four journalists of Al-Jazeera Television channel about 66 days ago on charge of sending reports, defying the government sanction, about the Army crackdown in the country. Sadly, no government of the world, nor the UNO issued any statement, demanding their release. Meanwhile, the State prosecutors have brought charge against them in a Cairo Court, where if the charges are proved, it is easy for any military government, they will be sent to the prison. The profession of journalism has become very risky through out the world. Not only the governments in many countries of the world, the mafia and its accomplices physically assault, even kill the journalists, and file fabricated cases against them. In Bangladesh, before the defamation law was reformed last year, if any individual filed defamation case against a journalist, the court used to issue arrest warrant. The Awami League government of Sheikh Hasina moved by the plight of the journalists reformed the law with provision of summoning the defendant to appear in the court for submission of statement about the matter. We think that the journalists will publish the truth and at the same time must refrain from releasing such report, as has no foundation. The government must protect us and give shelter. We cannot go long without the government supports. Will the government look into it?Mohammad AliRajshahi
