First round results
The 21st edition of the World Cup Football is underway in Russia. In this connection, I take the opportunity to furnish the eventual champions’ first round results for our readers. In 1954, West Germany lost to Hungary 3-8, Brazil drew with England 0-0 in 1958 and with Czechoslovakia 0-0 in 1962, England drew with Uruguay 0-0 in 1966, West Germany lost to East Germany 0-1 in 1974, Argentina lost to Italy 0-1 in 1978, Italy drew with Poland 1-1, Peru 0-0 and Cameron 1-1 to finish second above Cameron on goal average in 1982, Argentina drew with Italy 1-1 in 1986, West Germany drew with Colombia 1-1 in 1990, Brazil drew with Sweden 1-1 in 1994, Italy drew with United States 1-1 in 2006, Spain lost to Switzerland 0-1 in 2010 and Germany drew with Ghana 2-2 in 2014.
Brazil in 1970 and France in 1998 won all their first round matches. So there are no surprises if the seeded teams suffer setback in the first round in 2018.
