Permanent interest
What H.S.Suhrawardy, Sarat Bose and Abul Hashim could not do, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman did many years later in 1971. Bengal was partitioned in 1905 in response to the demands of the Muslims, but it was short-lived The British Government annulled the partition in 1912, as the ultra-Hindus violently opposed the division.
Interestingly, The Hindus, who did not support division of Bengal in 1905, opposed the Suhrawardy’s United Bengal proposal. Sarat Bose after returning from Delhi in a statement accused the Congress for failure. The Muslim League leaders, who worked for United Bengal, after failure thereof, joined the Pakistan movement.
The purpose of this letter is to express view that there is no permanent friend and no permanent foe, but there is permanent interest, as once again exposed in the last week general election in Malaysia.
