Tribute to language heroes :
February 21 is the International Mother Language Day. It became possible because our valiant sons did not hesitate to sacrifice their lives for their mother tongue. On this day, Central Shaheed Minar becomes adorned with colourful alponas and floral wreaths. People from all walks of life pay their homage to the martyrs.
But it is a matter of great regret that Bangla is losing its past glory. Nowadays children are not interested in reading Bangla books. Youngsters mostly speak in English or in erroneous Bangla tarnished with English.
Many adults also use wrong Bangla words. While a senior respected person who should be referred to as “tini”, they use the word “shey” to refer him.
In the case of Bangladeshis living abroad, their children do not understand Bangla except a few families. This is not acceptable. Parents should teach them their mother language. Bangla is a beautiful language, soothing and rich with vocabulary, we are proud of it.
