Sheikh Kamal Int’l Soccer Tourney
The second edition of the Sheikh Kamal International Gold Cup Football tournament will begin in Chittagong from the 18th instant with eight club teams from home and abroad. The teams are – Bangladesh Premier League Champions Dhaka Abahani Limited, traditional club Dhaka Mohammedan Sporting Club Limited, defending Champions and hosts Chittagong Abahani Limited, FC Poechen from South Korea, Shaheen Asmae from Afghanistan, TC Sports from Maldives, Stallion FC from Philippines and a team from a neighbouring country will compete in the tournament.
In his regard, we like to say that we thought that the organizers would try for an ‘A’ division club team from either Iraq or Iran in order to promote the magnitude of the competition. But our vision sank in the quicksand. Still we anticipate that the South Korean club alone will contribute both revenue and success of the tournament.
About the probabilities of the three home sides, they should play their best to restore past popularity of soccer in the country. As additional work, the organizers may publish a souvenir focusing on 10 super players of the past and present like Garincha of Brazil, Maradona of Argentina, Pele of Brazil, Cruyff of Holland, Yashin of Russia, Stefano of England and Beckenbauer of Germany.
