Re-excavation work of three beels located at Shaghata upazila in the district has been continuing since January for reserving water on it to boost production of fishes.
Fisheries department here is implementing the work at a cost of Taka 60 lakh under Fisheries Development Project in Rangpur Division while the government of Bangladesh is providing the fund.
The beels are Telian, Jhara-Barsha and Bagmara of the upazila.
The objective of the work is to enhance the fish production in the country to meet the demand of protein through re-excavating the water bodies, said an official of the department.
Besides, to create working opportunity to the locals so that they could lead their livelihood smoothly by catching and selling fishes and change their lots economically is another objective of the project, he also said.
District fisheries officer M. Abdud Dayan said the work was going on in full swing and it would continue till March 31.
