The Election Commission has announced the dates for re-polls to the Madhabi municipality and several other voting centres across Bangladesh.
Voting will be held on Jan 12 at Madhabdi and 39 other polling stations in 18 municipalities, which were suspended on reports of violence and malpractices. On Dec 30, when voting was underway at 234 municipalities, there were incidents of booth capture and rigging at a centre in Narsinghdi’s Madhabdi.
Authorities suspended voting at the centre, which was later rocked by explosions.
An assistant returning officer and a few others were injured in the explosion.
Locals said, supporters of the Awami League’s mayoral candidate unleashed violence to capture booths at the polling centre and tried to stuff boxes with stamped ballot papers.
After polling was suspended, Molotov cocktails and crude bombs were lobbed at the centre in presence of Narsinghdi deputy commissioner (DC) and superintendent of police (SP).
Later on the day, the Election Commission suspended the election for the entire municipality. Re-polls will also be held in 39 polling stations in 18 other municipalities where voting was suspended following incidents like clashes, ballot-stuffing.
