3-day long Rash Ceremony and Rash Mela (fair) started at Dublarchar in the Eastern Division of Sundarban forest on the bank of the Bay of Bengal on Wednesday concluded on Friday morning throng taking bath in the saline water of the sea.
Every year this Rash Utsab (ceremony) and Mela (fair) is held at Alorkol (Dublarchar) in the last week of Bengali month Kartik or in the first week of the Bengali month Agrahyan on the occasion of Rash Purnima (full moon)
This year the Rash Utsab was organised under the auspices of Dublarchar Fisherman’ Association headed by its president Major (Retd) Ziauddin and with the assistance of Sundarban forest department. Several thousand of people irrespective of ages and religions attended the Rash ceremony. A good number of foreign tourists also attended the Rash Utsab. On the occasion a Mela (fair) was held there. Various cultural functions like Kirtan, Jatra etc were also held on the occasion. Thousand of Hindu devotees took bath in the saline water of the sea on the occasion of Rash Purnima (full moon) in order to gain virtues.
