A rare Himalayan Mole was rescued from a village in Sreemangal upazila of Moulvibazar on Sunday night and later it was released on the same day in Janokicherra area under Lawacherra Forest of Kamalganj Upazila of Moulvibazar.
Sopon Deb Sajal, Director of Bangladesh Wildlife Service Foundation in the upazila the tiny black mole found from Phulcharri Tea Estate in Sreemangal Upazila.
The mole was while mole made way by digging soil in a canal in Phulcharri was being captured by tea worker Choiton Rikmun. We released it after giving general treatment at Bangladesh Wildlife Service Foundation in the upazila.
Tabibur Rahman, Assistant Conservator of wildlife management and nature conservation department in Moulvibazar told this correspondent, it is found in the central and eastern Himalayas usually between an elevation of 1,500 metres and 2,400 metres.
It mostly eats earthworms and insects and their larvae.
He said mole is classified as vulnerable on the IUCN Red List and their population is declining.
According to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), the English name of mole is Himalayan mole or Eastern mole. Its scientific name is Euroscaptor micrura.
This species is found in Nepal, Bhutan, India and Bangladesh-.
