Rape incidents have increased dangerously across the country. On an average at least seven rape incidents occurred in every day, says a human rights organization.
According to a recent statistics of Manusher Jonno Foundation (MJF), at least 41 children have been raped and three of them killed after rape in eight days between May 1 and 8.
It added, “None can escape themselves, including women-teenagers to minor girls from the rapists. Teachers, neighbours, friends and even sometimes guardians are accused as rapists.”
Another human rights body, Bangladesh Shishu Adhikar
Forum (BSAF), said that about 279 children have been raped in the country from January to April this year. Among these incidents, around 35 were gang raped. Besides, around 14 disabled girl children also became the victim of rape incidents.
It also stated that about 271 children were killed after rape in the country last year, while 16 children killed after rape in last four months.
Child rape has increased by 20 per cent in Bangladesh compared to 2018, said a BSAF press release. It also said that 234 children were raped in the first four months of last year as well.
While talking with The New Nation, eminent lawyer and jurist Dr Shahdeen Malik said, as a matter of fact that in our country if someone commits crime, we generally demand highest punishment but the judges do not give the maximum penalty to the culprit on the sense of humanity.
“To decrease the rate of crimes in the society, the government should reduce the rate of punishment of the culprits. It may play a vital role to implement the law,” Dr Malik said.
Besides, he said, it is also impossible to solve this problem by adopting only laws if we are not mentally changed.
On this issue, eminent Professor and Director of Social Welfare and Research of the University of Dhaka Dr Tahmina said it is not only the present day issue, it was also existed in the society since long before. But gang rape and rate of minor girl harassment have increased seriously.
To solve the problem, the government should promptly implement the stern laws in this regard, she added.
In this issue, Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JaSaD) President Hasanul Haque Inu said that both militants and rapists are working against the state. So, the government should take action against the rapists; similar to the action it takes against the militants.
