Rangpur Riders reached the semifinals of the 3rd Bangladesh Premier League when they defeated Syhet Super Stars by eight wickets in their Twenty20 cricket match at the flood-lit Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur on Monday.
Rangpur Riders gained 12 points from nine matches while Sylhet Super Stars remained with four points from eight outings.
Sent into bat first, Sylhet Super Stars scored 59 off 11.5 overs.
In reply, Rangpur Riders sailed home making 60 for the loss of two wickets when they had 61 balls to spare.
Rangpur Riders had a poor start as they lost their two openers Lendl Simmons for five and Soumya Sarkar for 11. When Sarkar returned to the pavilion Rangpur’s score was 22 for the loss of two wickets.
Shakib Al Hasan and Jahurul Islam salvaged their team from danger contributing together 38 runs for the unbroken third wicket stand.
Especially, Shakib Al Hasan played the key role to reach the winning spot. Shakib remained unbeaten with 29. His 24-ball innings was studded with four fours.
Jahurul Islam scored 9 (not out).
Pacer Mohammad Shahid of Sylhet Super Stars restored some parity for his team bagging two wickets at the cost of 18 runs.
Earlier, Spinner Arafat Sunny, Mohammad Nabi and left-arm spinner Shakib Al Hasan played the key role in wrecking Sylhet Super Stars innings.
Arafat Sunny captured four wickets at the cost of 14 runs while Mohammad Nabi grabbed three wickets instead of 15 runs and Shakib Al Hasan bagged a pair of wickets for 25 runs. Arafat Sunny was adjudged the Man of the Match for his outstanding bowling performance.
Thisara Perera also helped them as he trapped leg before wicket in-form Ravi Bopara for 5 when Sylhet’s score was 38 for the loss of seven wickets.
Sylhet Super Stars lost their wickets in regular intervals.
Sohail Tanvir was the only Sylhet’s batsman who could reach the double-digit figures. He scored 20 from 17 balls with one four and one sixer.
Arafat Sunny dismissed opener EMDY Munaweera for naught, removed the other opener Junaid Siddique for 5.
Second-down Mushfiqur Rahim (9) was caught at the point by Muktar Ali from a delivery of Arafat Sunny when was caught at the point by Muktar Ali off Arafat Sunny when Sylhet’s score was 24 for the loss of three wickets.
One-down Nurul Hasan (8) was caught at the mid-off by Soumya Sarkar off Shakib Al Hasan when Sylhet’s total was 25 for the loss of four wickets.
Shahid Afridi (4) was stumped out by wicketkeeper Mohammad Mithun from a delivery of Shakib Al Hasan when Sylhet’s score was 29 for the loss of five wickets.
Then Arafat Sunny dismissed Nazmul Hossain Milon for naught.
Later, Mohammad Nabi dismissed Abdur Razzak (4), removed Sohail Tanvir and picked up the wicket of Rubel Hossain, who scored only zero.
