BSS, Rangpur :
The farmers produced an all-time record quantity of 31,629 tonnes aromatic rice during the just-ended Transplanted Aman (T-Aman) season in this agriculture region, official sources said.
According to the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) sources, the increasing demand with lucrative price of aromatic rice has been inspiring the farmers in enhancing cultivation to increase production of the high priced rice in recent years.
“The farmers had cultivated aromatic rice on 13,662 hectares of land to produce 31,629 tonnes clean rice with average yield rate of 2.315 tonnes per hectare in the region this time,” Horticulture Specialist of the DAE Khondker Md Mesbahul Islam told BSS today.
The farmers cultivated BRRI dhan34, ‘Begunbichi’, ‘Kalijira’, ‘Kataribhog’, ‘Rasulbhog’, ‘Badshabhog’, ‘Uknimadhu’, ‘Khirshabhog’, ‘Babuibhog’, ‘Chnisankar’, ‘Tilkapur’, ‘Chinigura’, ‘Zamaisohagi’, ‘Banskani’ and some other varieties of aromatic rice this season.
“The medium low-land is suitable for farming aromatic rice and its production could be increased ensuring supplementary irrigation,” Mesbahul said adding that farmers were showing more interest in farming of aromatic rice to earn more profits.
Noted rice scientist and former Chief Scientific Officer of Bangladesh Rice Research Institute Dr M A Mazid said prospect of expanded cultivation of aromatic rice to increase its production was brighter in the country’s northern region.
“Special importance should be put on improving crushing and processing systems for aromatic rice,” he said adding that the farmers could get more profits through expanded farming of ‘Chinigura’, ‘Kalijira’ and BRRI dhan34 aromatic rice varieties.
Agriculture and Environment Coordinator of RDRS Bangladesh Mamunur Rashid said aromatic rice varieties like ‘Chinigura’, ‘Kalijira’ and BRRI dhan34 being produced in the northern region were of the international standard to attract more buyers abroad.
“There are enormous potential for enhancing aromatic rice production utilising the latest conservation agriculture technologies and existing natural resources,” he said adding that that these varieties could be exported abroad after meeting local demand.
Regional Additional Director of the DAE Md Shah Alam laid special emphasis on adopting integrated pest managements and optimum use of compost fertilisers during cultivation of aromatic rice to further boosting production and increasing exports.
