Staff Reporter :The Dhaka city on Sunday witnessed fresh heavy rainfall, causing suffering for the city dwellers and creating traffic disruptions. The rain hit the city since morning, inundating many streets. The Bangladesh Metrological Department recorded 18 millimetres of rainfall in the city between 06:00 am and 01:00 pm. Like other parts of the city, the heart of the administration-Bangladesh Secretariat-also faced waterlogged, hampering the daily works of government officials.Female staffs mostly suffered in the Secretariat. Some were seen entering the Secretariat wet. Some were seen taking alternative ways to go to one office to another. Public Works Department deputy-assistant engineer Mohammad Moazzem Hossain Khan said that the water level outside the Secretariat went higher that caused the waterlogging. Streets in Mirpur, Dhanmondi, Farmgate, Moghbazar, Mouchak, Malibagh, Rampura, Motijheel and some other parts of the city were also inundated.The heavy rainfall was also recorded in several other parts of the country. The Met officials said that the rainfall in this time of year while the monsoon is one the way to depart is not completely unusual as it has been happened once in every 10 to 15 years.Meanwhile, the Met office says that the rain might continue for the next few days. A depression in the Bay of Bengal is causing rain in much of Bangladesh, including Dhaka.Maritime ports of Chittagong, Cox’s Bazar, Mongla and Payra have been advised to keep hoisted local ‘Cautionary Signal No-3’. According to the Met office, a low over the central Bay and adjoining area moved northwestwards which was lying over westcentral Bay and adjoining northwest bay on Sunday evening. Under its influence steep pressure gradient persist over North Bay. Squally weather may affect North Bay, adjoining coastal area of Bangladesh and the maritime ports.All fishing boats and trawlers over North Bay have been advised to remain close to the coast and proceed with caution until further notice.Weather forecast says that light to moderate rain accompanied by gusty winds is likely in the areas under Khulna, Barisal, Dhaka, Chittagong and Sylhet divisions. Heavy rainfall is expected in Rajshahi and Rangpur divisions. Due to very heavy rainfall landslide may occur at places over the Hilly regions of Chittagong division, said Met office.
