Moderate rain drenched over Dhaka city on Tuesday morning and inundated main streets resulting in severe traffic congestion.
Traffic movements on Mirpur Road from Dhammondi stretching up to Gabtoli, Mirpur-10 intersection, Mohammadpur Town Hall Kancha Market area, Gulshan, Mohakhali, Kuril Bishwa Road, Airport Road partially came to halt and were very slow in some areas.
Abdul Baten, a businessman, said, he left his business office at Uttara at 1pm and it took for him more than five hours to reach his residence at Dhanmondi due to the density of the traffic.
I managed to reach Farmgate, my workplace, at 11am after leaving my quarter in Mohammadpur at 8:45am, said an office employee to The New Nation.
Commuters from Uttara faced severe traffic jam on the Airport Road.
Many people travelling from Merul Badda to Paltan crossing, usually a 40-minute path, spent two to three hours on the road.
A few buses plied through the city leaving more passengers at auto-rickshaws’ mercy.
Shariful Alam, a banker, said he had to travel from Mlibagh to his office at Paltan by rickshaw when the auto-rickshaw drivers demanded Tk 400. The journey, which usually takes 20 to 30 minutes,
 took two hours on Tuesday morning, he said. Meanwhile, Met office recorded 54 millimetres (mm) of rainfall between 6am to 9am on Tuesday.
Adjacent districts of Dhaka also witnessed moderate rainfall. Madaripur experienced 39 mm of rainfall while Gopalganj 9 mm and Tangail 8 mm during the time, according the Met office control room.
In the last 24 hours, Met office recorded 18 mm rainfall across the country and the control room said the rain may persist for the next two days.
The low pressure over Madhya Pradesh of India and adjoining area now lies over Gujarat and adjoining area. The axis of monsoon trough runs through the centre of the low, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal, thence northeastwards to Assam across central part of Bangladesh. One of its associated troughs extends to North Bay. Monsoon is fairly active over Bangladesh and moderate over North Bay.
Light to moderate rain/thunder showers accompanied by temporary gusty wind is likely to occur at many places over Rangpur, Rajshahi, Mymensingh, Dhaka, Khulna, Barisal, Chittagong and Sylhet divisions with moderately heavy to heavy rainfalls at places over the country.
