UNB, Dhaka :
BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia on Saturday alleged that the education quality in the country has degraded gradually as the government has long been showing ‘inflated’ pass rate for its self-complacency.
“There’s no denying that our education quality has gradually fallen as the pass rate has been inflated for complacency. Our progress will be hindered in the days to come and we’ll fall behind in global competition if we can’t overcome the situation,” she said.
The BNP chief came up with the remarks while speaking at the concluding session of a day-long seminar titled ‘Bangladesh’s Current Education System and Our Future’ at Ladies Club in the city.
Narrating her party’s stance on improving education quality, she said BNP in its ‘Vision 2030’ proposed spending five percent of the GDP for ensuring cent percent literacy rate and overcoming the existing problems in the education sector.”
“We want to establish a quality education system so that the education can be a means for a better life instead of only means for attaining degrees,” Khaleda observed.
Stressing the need for development of the country’s human resources, she said the country should now attach priority to creating skilled human resources and attractive job market by increasing investment in the education sector.
Khaleda said, the country’s development can be strengthened by creating skilled manpower having knowledge on ICT and modern education.
Mentioning that education teaches people to be respectful for democracy, alternative opinions and freedom of expression, she said, “Unfortunately, the government has stampeded this basic objective of the education.”
The BNP chief also alleged that the government is brutally suppressing its opponents. “In fact, all the objectives of the education is now obliterated.”
She said there is no good governance and the rule of law in the country. “The government has got crazy to eliminate all voices and opinions of the opposition out of political vengeance. We must get rid of the situation.”
Stating that the country needs an acceptable and life-oriented education system, Khaleda said, “We must build an education system so that people of Bangladesh can compete at the international level.”
If her party is voted to power, the BNP chief said they will make the education-system public welfare-oriented one. “The young generation must come out of their illusion for only getting degrees… we want to ensure employment opportunities for the educated unemployed youths.”
