Sheikh Arif Bulbon :
Bengal Foundation organised two drawing and painting exhibitions to pay tribute to its late mentor and renowned artist Qayyum Chowdhury on the occasion of his 83rd birth anniversary.
The exhibitions are being held at two arts venues of the foundation – Bengal Shilpalaya and Bengal Art Lounge in the city’s Dhanmondi and in Gulshan areas respectively.
The first exhibition is displaying 122 sketches and illustrations drawn by Qayyum Chowdhury for the arts and literary magazine Kali O Kolom, while the second exhibition is displaying a collection of his 25 paintings.
Illustrations made for Kali O Kolom, also a publication of Bengal Foundation, were merged with the poems, reviews and short stories published in different issues of the magazine to enhance the readers’ understanding of the pieces.
In them, there are sailing boats, animals such as cats and dogs, sleeping people, butterflies, fish, forests, trees and clouds as well as scenic beauty of the rivers – all coming alive through the simple lines of the sketches, without any artificial colour or intricate artistic strategy.
Qayyum Chowdhury would also write poems for Kali O Kolom and other magazines and several such poems, with corresponding illustrations, were also put on display at the Bengal Shilpalaya exhibition.
The poems reveal his poetic genius and creative versatility.
Hemonto Sondhya is one such poem in which the poet depicts a quiet late autumn evening and the matching illustration showing sailing boats appropriately captures the imagination of the visitors.
At the Bengal Art Lounge, among other paintings on display, there is one untitled acrylic piece dominated by bold strokes of bright colour, portraying a lying woman.
In another artwork, an acrylic on canvas painting, portrays a woman taking shelter under leaves from heavy downpour.
Both the exhibitions will remain open from 12:00pm to 8:00pm, with the Bengal Shilpalaya exhibition finishing on April 4 while the Art Lounge one on March 28.
