Private cars occupy 70 percent space on the city’s total roads and streets and carry 3.8 percent passenger only, speakers at a discussion said on Thursday.
On the other hand, other transports, which are constrained to use 30 percents of roads, carry 96.2 percent passengers.
Some 11 organisations arranged the discussion at National Museum in the city to mark the World Car free Day.
The speakers, including POBA Chairman Abu Naser Khan, called on the government to control the plying of the private cars to reduce traffic gridlock.
They say that the country is bearing loss about Tk 20,000 crore on account of traffic jam every year.
Bangladesh Poribesh Andolon (BAPA), Poribesh Bachao Andolon (POBA) and Bangladesh Institute of Planners (BIP) , among others, were the sponsors.
