BSS, Panchagarh :
Farmers in all the five upazilas of the district have been showing more interest in farming different varieties of pulse for the last couple of years.
According to Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE), an intensive programme has been undertaken for cultivating different varieties of pulse during the current Robi season.
Under the programme, mashkalai has been cultivated on 350 hectares, masur on 150 hectares, khesari on 120 hectares, sesame seed(Teel) on 110 hectares and chickpea on 50 hectares in the district.
A number of farmers said pulse cultivation was not popular in the district a few years back. But because of high market prices of the crop, the farmers have been encouraged to cultivate different varieties of pulse.
The DAE has set up a good number of demonstration plots of the crop for disseminating updated pulse cultivation knowledge and technology among the common farmers, DAE officials said.
