The High Court on Wednesday ordered the government to issue a gazette within one month declaring the 7th March as a ‘historic national day’.
The authorities were also directed to erect murals of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in all districts and upazilas within the Mujib Year, the birth centenary of the
Bangabandhu and were asked to submit a compliance report in the court within one month.
The High Court Bench of Justice FRM Nazmul Ahasan and Justice KM Kamrul Kader passed the order with rule after hearing on a writ petition filed seeking court’s declaration on the March 7 as the ‘national historic day’.
In the rule, the HC wanted to know in four weeks as to why the respondents should not be directed to include historic speech of the 7th March in the textbooks of primary, secondary and higher secondary levels.
Advocate Bashir Ahmed appeared in the court on behalf of the writ petition, while Deputy Attorney General ABM Abdullah Al Mahmud Bashar stood for the State.
Following a writ petition, another High Court Bench on November 20, 2017, issued a rule asking the government to explain as to why they should not be directed to declare 7th March as the ‘national historic day’ since Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman gave historical speech on that day.
In the rule, the court also asked the authorities concerned of the government to show causes as to why they should not be ordered to reconstruct the stage and a sculpture of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman delivering speech with waving finger at Suhrawardy Udyan where the historical speech was delivered.
Advocate Bashir Ahmed, former Secretary of the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA), filed the petition. The petition came to the cause-list of the High Court Bench yesterday.
The lawyer filed the petition after the UNESCO recognized the historic March 7 speech of Bangabandhu as a world documentary heritage.
