The probe body formed by the Home Ministry over the killing of the retired army officer in Cox’s Bazar says it expects to file its finding on Aug 23.
The inquiry headed by Chittagong’s additional divisional commissioner on Sunday held a public hearing in the district town as part of its investigation into the death of retired Major Sinha Mohammad Rashed Khan in a reported police firing.
“A total of 11 people registered to testify as witnesses, but we heard nine as the remaining two persons did not seemed to be witnesses of the incident,” Additional Divisional Commissioner Mizanur Rahman told the media after the hearing.
The public hearing began at the office of the Rohingya camp in-charge at Shamlapur at Teknaf’s Baharchhara union around 10am.
On the night of July 31, retired army officer Sinha Mohammad Rashed Khan was
shot dead at a police check-post on the Marine Drive Road between Cox’s Bazar and Teknaf.
On August 5, Sinha’s sister Sharmin Shahria Ferdous filed a case with the Senior Judicial Magistrate Court of Teknaf against nine people including Pradeep Kumar Das and Liakat Ali.
Seven police personnel, including Teknaf police station’s Officer-in-Charge Pradeep Kumar Das and Inspector Liakat Ali, were suspended in connection with the killing of Sinha.
On August 6, all seven of the accused surrendered and sought bail from Senior Judicial Magistrate Muhang Helal Uddin’s court but were denied and sent to jail.
Later, based on the plea of the investigating officer (IO), the same court granted seven days remand for Pradeep Kumar Das, Liakat Ali, and Nanda Dulal Rakkhit. The court gave two days of remand for each of the four others accused.
On August 7, Bangladesh Police suspended the accused policemen.
Other suspended policemen include Sub-inspector Nandadulal Rakshit, Assistant Sub-inspector Liton Miya, and Constables Shafanur Rahman, Kamal Hossain and Abdullah Al Mamun.
