The Progressive Student Alliance (PSA) yesterday demanded proper investigation into all killings that have taken place so far on the Chittagong University campus and exemplary punishment to those responsible for the killings. The leaders of the students’ alliance came up with the demand at a press conference held at Chittagong University Central Students’ Union (CUCSU).
The press conference was attended by Rashedul Samir, president of Bangladesh Chhatra Union and its general secretary Mehedi Hasan, Prabal Majumder, president of Samajtantrik Chhatra Front, and Anwar Sadat Junayed, president of Bangladesh Chhatra Federation and its secretary Bikul Tazim.
On behalf of the PSA, Bikul Tazim read out the written statement at the press conference and demanded lifting the ban on the political activities on the Chittagong University campus.
“The seats in the student dormitories should be allotted on the basis of talent. Besides, the illegal residents should be driven out of the student dormitories and arms and ammunitions should be seized,” demanded Bikul.
“The election to Chittagong University Central Students’ Union (CUCSU) which has been due for 24 years should be held without least delay,” demanded he.
The leaders at the conference held the culture of impunity responsible of the repeated killings at all the public universities of the country, including the recent one at Chittagong University where Tapas Sarkar, a student of Sanskrit Department was killed due to the factional feud in Bangladesh Chhatra League. The leaders alleged that the Chittagong University authorities were reluctant to ensure justice for the previous killings on the campus.
“The CU authorities slapped a ban on all political activities on the campus denying the inalienable right to freedom of expression. We think the ban was imposed only to coerce the legitimate movement of the students, said a leader of the PSA.
The speakers at the press briefing also alleged that the student politics is not responsible for the killings on the campus.
