Promoting hygiene strategies to reduce diseases stressed

Speakers at a function stressed the need for promoting hygiene strategies and practices comprehensively to reduce water and sanitation related diseases.
“Improving water quality, hygiene practices and excreta disposal are all important in reducing high rate of under-five child mortality due to diarrhea, dysentery, typhoid, cholera and hepatitis”, they said.
They made the comments while addressing workshop on National Hygiene Promotion Strategy (NHPS) for water supply and sanitation sector in Bangladesh at the auditorium of Sadar upazila parishad on Wednesday.
SKS Foundation, Water Aid, policy support unit (PSU) of Local Government Division (LGD) jointly arranged the function for the stakeholders with the financial support of UKAID.
Additional deputy commissioner (General) Abu Bakar Sidddique addressed the workshop as the chief guest and civil surgeon (CS) Dr. Nirmalendu Chowdhury and deputy director (DD) of Local Government Section Moklesur Rahman were present as special guests.
With UNO Ashraful Momin Khan in the chair, the ceremony was also addressed among others by acting upazila chairman Rashida Begum, sub assistant engineer of Public Health Engineering Department ASM Aref Billah Dakua, Boali UP chairman Shahidul Islam Sabu, and journalist Sarker M. Shahiduzzaman.
In the presentation, Moksedul Alam, programme officer of Water Aid Bangladesh, said the objective of the NHPS is to promote sustainable use of improved water supply and sanitation infrastructures and to create an enabling environment for ensuring hygiene promotion.
CS Nirmalendu Chowdhury said water and excreta related diseases such as diarrhea, worm infestation and other respiratory diseases still remain a major health concern in Bangladesh. Washing hand with soap or simply rinsing hands without soap prior to preparation of food can reduce occurrence of diarrhea in children, he added.
Many recommendations and action plan were also adopted to implement the NHPS in the district during the open discussion session of the workshop.
