Production of urea fertilizer resumes after BMRI of CUFL

The largest urea fertilizer producing factory of the country -Chittagong Urea Fertilizer Company Limited (CUFL) resumes its production on Wednesday after long two and half years of closure, it goes in production again since Wednesday evening experimentally, sources in CUFL said. CUFL was shut in 2015 for BMRI in Reactor and cooling tower at a cost of Tk.40 crores.
Sources said , the Karnaphuli Gas Distribution Company Limited (KDGL) has been supplying a total of 47. 728 million CFT gas for the production of CUFL. The CUFL needs 50 million cft gas for its full production as raw materials of urea . According to the sources, the state-owned CUFL, is likely to resume full production in the current month. Mentionable that the production at CUFL was suspended on January 31 in 2015 as the Bangladesh Chemical Industries Corporation (BCIC) had taken up a project to install liner in the reactor at a cost of Tk 180 million and repair of cooling tower at a cost of Tk 220 million. The BCIC assigned the task to an Italian firm in December in 2015 to replace the Liner at a cost of Tk 18 crores.
Similarly , BCIC entrusted a German company SPIG, SRL to renovate cooling tower of the plant at a cost of Tk 22 crores.
After completion of the installation of liner in reactor and Cooling tower, the production of the plant resumed. CUFL commissioned in 1987 duly constructing the plant at a cost of Tk 1700 crores , CUFL ended its guaranty period of 20-year life in 2007.
Besides, the CUFL had to face loss every year due to non-supply of natural gas. The total demand of gas in the CUFL is 51 million CFT daily. But the KGDL could not supply the requisite quantity of gas regularly.
The production capacity of the factory is 1650 metric tons per day , sources added.
