Pro-AL, BNP teachers share JUTA elections

Pro-Awami League and BNP-backed teachers have agreed to share the 15 executive committee posts of Jahangirnagar University Teachers Association (JUTA) through negotiations.
Awami League backed-Progressive Teachers’ Forum bagged nine posts including that of the president, while the pro-BNP Nationalist Teachers’ Forum secured six including the general secretary’s post.
Two panels from the pro-Awami League forum and one from the BNP-backed group submitted their nominations for the Dec 31 elections, but the two sides reached a compromise on Monday, the last day for candidature withdrawal.
The candidates, except those selected through the understanding over the 15 posts, withdrew their nominations on Monday.
Following the withdrawal, the 15 were declared elected.
They include environmental science department professor Md Khabiruddin (president) and pharmacy department professor Mohammad Mafruhi Sattar (general secretary).
Election commissioner Prof AKM Abul Kalam said: “Results were announced on (Monday) night as there was only one candidate for every post.”
The two teachers’ forums had shared the 15 posts through negotiations in the last election too.
Others declared elected from the Progressive Teachers’ Forum are ASM Abu Dayen of Bangla department (treasurer) and Ajit Kumar Majumder of the statistics department, Asit Baran Paul of the archaeology department, SM Badiar Rahman of the biochemistry and molecular biology department, Faridur Rahman of the physics department, Rasheda Akhtar of the anthropology department, Bashir Ahmed of the government and politics department and Anwar Khasru Pavel of the microbiology department (members).
Those elected from the Nationalist Teachers’ Forum include Najmul Alam of botany department (vice-president), Muhammad Nazrul Islam of the environmental science department (joint secretary) and Mohammad Kamrul Ahsan of the philosophy department, Md Sharif Uddin of the mathematics department and Md Shamsul Alam of government and politics department (members).
