Pro-active biodiversity conservation protecting wetlands, forests stressed

Experts and environmentalists from home and abroad on Friday called for more pro-active biodiversity conservation protecting wetlands, forests and natural resources to help ensure sustainable livelihood in different countries of the Asian region especially in Bangladesh, Nepal, India and Japan.
They also underscored the need for protecting our rich biodiversity from the onslaughts of degradation, depletion and extinctions and said participatory management, research, valuation of common property resources, education and awareness are essential side by side enforcing conservation laws, rules and legislations.
They were speaking at a dialogue on ‘Biodiversity
Conservation for Sustainable Livelihood’ organized by Bangladesh Poush here today with support from Ramsar Centre Japan (RCJ). RCJ Secretary General Ms Reiko Nakamura, environment ministry joint secretary Dr Mohammad Nasiruddin, Nepal Wetland Society Secretary General Dr Bishnu Bhandari, India’s Durga Prasad Das, Japan’s H Nakamura, Bangladesh Poush secretary general Sanowar Hossain, FEJB and APFEJ Chairman Quamrul Islam Chowdhury, UNDP’s Dr Aminul Islam, IUCN Country Director Ishtiquddin Ahmad, CFSD secretary general Mahfuz Ullah, BRAC VC Dr Ainun Nishat, Bangladesh Poush expert Dr Tapan Ghosal took part in the interactive dialogue joined by leading conservation experts, environmentalists and policymakers from home and abroad.
