Business Desk :
A private firm has requested the government to allow export of 5,000 tonnes of hilsa to different countries in Asia, Middle East, and Europe on the occasion of the birth centenary of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, officials said.
The firm, Eutech Systems limited, has recently written a letter to the commerce ministry seeking approval in this regard.
“We have received a letter and are now working on it,” said a commerce ministry official.
In its letter, the firm said, “We are interested to export the country’s hilsa fish to various countries across the globe. We have taken all necessary steps to this end.”
In September last, the government allowed export of 1,475 tonnes of hilsa to India as a gesture of goodwill on the occasion of Durga Puja, an annual religious festival of Hindu community, reports UNB.
Hilsa export has remained suspended since 2012.
In 2019, the government gave permission to export 500 tonnes of hilsa during Durga Puja.
