The prime suspect and his associate in connection with the killing of Gaibandha-1 Constituency lawmaker of the ruling Awami League Manzurul Islam Liton, were arrested from the city’s Badda area early Thursday.
“The main suspect, Ashraful Islam, son of Ameer of Sundarganj Thana unit of Jamaat-e-Islami and his associate Zahirul Islam have been captured from the city’s Badda area at about 12:15am on Thursday,” an office of the elite force Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) said.He said that they would be sent to Sundarganj Police Station of Gaibandha district immediately.
Meanwhile, Our Gaibandha Correspondent adds; two more suspects in connection with the killing of Liton, were arrested from Sadullahpur upazila of Gaibandha and Auliapur area of Dinajpur districts on Thursday.
A special squad of Detective Branch (DB) of Gaibandha police arrested Ratan from his relative’s house at Taherpur village.
Ratan, brother of Tariqul Islam Nayan, Chairman of Naldanga Union Council and a local AL leader, went into hiding soon after the murder of MP Liton.
Besides, Safiul Islam, another suspect of the Liton murder case, was also arrested from Auliapur area under Dinajpur district.
“Gaibandha police in association with the Dinajpur police arrested Saiful,” Atiur Rahman, Officer-in-Charge of Sundarganj Police said.
Police earlier arrested six leaders and activists of Jamaat from different parts of Sundarganj.
Unknown miscreants shot dead MP Liton at his home at Shahbaz in Sundarganj on December 31 last. A murder case was lodged to this end.
