Finance Minister AMA Muhith’s budget speech proposed to increase tax and duties on a number of commodities, including imported rice, mosquito killing bat, drawing book for kids, talcum powder, cars, low-priced cigarettes and mobile SIM card and services, while placing the budget for the 2016-17 fiscal year.
Price of rapeseed cake and soya cake may be increased as the duty has been increased to 10 percent from the existing five percent for production of these products locally. However, supplementary duty on stabiliser for milk has been reduced to 10 percent from the existing 20 percent.
Finance Minister also proposed to increase tax on
electric bill, restaurant bill, ready-made garments over Tk 1,000, gold, silver and jewellery made of gold and silver, mineral water, aluminium foil, plane fare, plastic bag, rope way or cable car ride, imported imitation jewellery, industrial solar water heater, legal services, lottery ticket, packers and movers, e-reading device, gold bar, imported golf car, VoIP instrument, bolder stone, stone chips, perfume, iron rod bar, iron coil, mixed iron, angle shape, iron, non-alloy steel, light holder, optical fiber and other machinery.
