Prices of vegetables sky-high

The price of vegetables, fresh water fishes and rice showed upward trend, but that of onion, ginger and salt decreased slightly in Dhaka and the metropolitan cities of the country on Friday.
Prices of bitter gourd, pointed gourd, snake gourd, sponge gourd and teasel gourd have increased by Tk five to 12 per kg yesterday, and all kinds of leafy items increased by Tk three to Tk six per bunch.
Bitter gourd (ustha) was sold at Tk 65 to 85 per kg, sponge gourd at Tk 55 to 60 and teasel gourd at Tk 50 to 60, according to traders of Karwan Bazar. The brinjal price was static at Tk 50-Tk 80 per kg, but tomato was selling at Tk 90 to 100 per kg, bean at Tk 100 to 130 per kg, okra at Tk 80 per kg, cucumber at Tk 40, french at Tk 70, radish at Tk 40, potato at Tk 25, eddo at Tk 40 to 45 per kg, clocacia stem (kochu loti) at Tk 40 to 45 per kg, pumpkin (medium size) at Tk 50 to 65 per piece, bottle gourd at Tk 50 to 70, ash gourd at Tk 30 to 35 per piece, cabbage at Tk 40 cauliflower at 40 per piece, coriander leaves at Tk 300 per kg,
green chilli at Tk 140 to 160 kg, capsicum (red) at Tk 450 per kg and capsicum (green) at Tk 350 to 380 per kg. Different varieties of leafy vegetables were sold at Tk 10-Tk 25 per bunch.
Md Abdul Latif, President of Karwan Bazar Kanchamal Aratdar Baboshayee Samity, an association of vegetable wholesalers, said that prices of vegetables increased mainly due to the plunging supply of summer vegetables (Kharip-2) and the delay in arrival of the early varieties of winter vegetables in the markets.
He said in the past the winter vegetables used to arrive in the markets after the second week of October.
But, this time the supply of such varieties is short of demand due to water-logging in many vegetable-growing areas, he said.
He also said, prices of vegetables might start falling within a week as supplies would reach the market from some northern districts.
However, salt prices receded by Tk 2-3 a kg. A one-kg pack of refined iodised salt was sold at Tk 40 and thick salt at Tk 25. Onion price fell by Tk 2.0 a kg and ginger Tk 10 in the week.
Prices of most river fish increased by Tk 30 to Tk 60 per kg. Fresh Tengra was sold at Tk 450-Tk 600 a kg, shrimp Tk 450-Tk 800, Shoul Tk 280-Tk 350 and Kachki Tk 300-Tk 400.
Cultivated Cat fish (Shing) was selling at Tk 350- 600 per kg, barbel at Tk 500 to 700, butter fish at Tk 300 to 350, Puti at Tk 250 per kg, cultivated koi at Tk 160 to 200 per kg and koi (river) at Tk 400, Fali Chanda (Rupchada) at Tk 800 to 1000 per kg, Lata fish at Tk 200 to 220 and Eel at Tk 350 to 600 kg, sheat (boal) at Tk 400 to 700 per kg, Ek-thota (Kaitta fish) at Tk 350 to Tk 400, Baila at Tk 450 to 600 kg, coral fish at Tk 550 kg, river Pangas at Tk 350 kg, cultivated Pangas at Tk 130 kg, Rajputi at Tk 300 kg, Tilapia at Tk 140 to Tk 200 kg, Ruhit at Tk 250 to Tk 380 kg, medium size carp (katol) at Tk 230 -360 per kg.
The medium quality rice like Brridhan-28, 29, Paijam, Kajol Lata, Parija and Ratna selling at Tk40-Tk45 per kg in the weekend on Friday. Fine varieties like Miniket, Najirshail and Kataribhog remained static maintaining higher rates. Miniket of different qualities were sold at Tk 46-Tk 54 per kg and Najirshail at Tk48-Tk 57 per kg on Friday.
